California Highway Patrol is responding to reports of a vehicle partially blocking westbound traffic in Paso Robles.

A man in his 50s was fatally struck by a vehicle while walking on Highway 99 over the weekend, authorities said.

The man, who has not been identified but was described by a Stanislaus County Coroner’s Office as being of Asian descent, was in the slow lane of southbound Highway 99 around 4:38 a.m. on Saturday.

According to the California Highway Patrol, the man was north of Kansas Avenue when the driver of a Toyota came upon him.

The driver, Sukhbir Singh, 57, of Modesto, did not have time to take evasive action and the right side of his vehicle hit the man.

Singh stopped and cooperated with officers, according to the CHP. The pedestrian died at the scene.

Investigators are still trying to determine what the man was doing on the highway.

Coroner’s Office Sgt. Jesus Sigala said the preliminary investigation suggests his death was accidental.
