Fire near Creekside Golf Course in Modesto sends 2 to hospital. Pets reportedly perish

Two people who suffered what appeared to be minor to moderate burns were taken to local hospitals after escaping a house fire in east Modesto on Wednesday morning. One was transported by helicopter.

The fire was reported at about 6:45 a.m. The single-family home is on Fort Henry Drive, just off Dry Creek Drive across from the Creekside Golf Course.

Up to nine people reside at the house, Modesto Fire Department Division Chief Tim Tietjen said at the scene. All were out when crews arrived on scene and found flames and heavy smoke coming from the house.

A dog removed from the residence was active and appeared unhurt, but was given oxygen and evaluated. As many as eight other pets were reported to have been in the home, Tietjen said. Firefighters found several, including some that had not survived, and continued to look for more.

With so many people living there, Tietjen said, firefighters had to contend with “quite a bit of clutter” in the home and backyard.

The dispatch for the working structure fire drew five engines, one firetruck, two battalion chiefs and a fire investigator, he said. The response included Ceres and Stanislaus Consolidated crews. No second alarm was needed.
