Highway 99 in Modesto closed by shattered glass

Traffic was moving again Monday evening on a stretch of Highway 99 in Modesto that had been closed by a glass spill.

The California Highway Patrol had reported that about 90 large panes fell from a big rig in the northbound lanes near the Briggsmore-Carpenter interchange.

Caltrans used sweepers to clear the shattered glass, which had spilled at about 3:45 p.m. The CHP said the mess was about the size of a football field.

The glass truck was driven by Jerald McConathy, 69, of Chiloquin, Ore., said Officer Thomas Olsen of the CHP. The panes were described as 96 by 130 inches.

Other details were not yet available, including possible damage to other vehicles.
