Mother Nature’s gift to Modesto for Christmas Day will be gray and overcast skies with scattered showers and maybe a hint of sun.

We can then expect mostly sunny skies for several days after that. Modesto’s next chance of rain could happen Sunday, but it’s too early to say how much could fall.

Daytime highs will be in the low 50s.

Christmas Eve is expected to start with morning fog and then afternoon clearing before clouding up for the next system to arrive Christmas Day.

Modesto could get about a one-tenth of an inch of rain Christmas Day, said Brendon Rubin-Oster, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Sacramento.

He said the weather system will hug Northern California’s coast, bringing one-quarter to a half-inch of precipitation there and scattered showers in the Valley before heading to Southern California.

He said Southern California can expect 1 to 2 inches of rain from the system and 1 to 2 feet of snow at the higher elevations in the mountains. Yosemite National Park could get six inches of snow.

The last system brought a quarter-inch of rain to Modesto on Sunday and early Monday, according to the Modesto Irrigation District.

The MID reported Modesto had received 3 inches of rain this rain season as 12 p.m. Monday. The MID tracks the season from July 1 to June 30. Modesto gets 12.2 inches of rain in an average season.
