Services for former Modesto Councilman Dave Lopez, who died Monday from the injuries he sustained in a Highway 120 accident in Manteca, will be open to the public.

His rosary vigil is 4 to 7 p.m. Friday at Franklin & Downs Funeral Home, 1050 McHenry Ave. Recitation of the rosary is 6 p.m. A funeral Mass is 12 p.m. Saturday at St. Stanislaus Catholic Church, 1200 Maze Blvd. A reception will follow at the McHenry Museum, 1402 I St.

A representative from Franklin & Downs said all of the events are open to the public.

The family said donations in Mr. Lopez’s honor can be made to Love Modesto, which promotes citywide volunteerism.

Donations can be made by calling Love Modesto at 209-566-9343 or on its website, www.lovemodesto.com. Checks can be mailed to the Love Modesto office, 1401 F St., Modesto, 95354.

Authorities have reported that Mr. Lopez, 53, was driving a pickup truck east on Highway 120, west of Highway 99, when he was rear-ended by a big rig around noon Monday. He died from his injuries later that day at a hospital.

He was elected to the City Council in 2007 and 2011 and unsuccessfully ran for mayor in 2015.

Mr. Lopez was an unabashed cheerleader for Modesto, which he called the “greatest city in the world” and had a record of grass-roots action as a councilman.
