Man killed by train next to Downtown Transportation Center in Modesto

A man was struck and killed by a train in downtown Modesto on Wednesday morning.

Police said the body of an adult male was found about 4:15 a.m. lying along the northeast side of the Union Pacific Railroad tracks behind the Downtown Transportation Center at I and Ninth streets.

Operators of a northbound train had reported a possible man down in the area, the Modesto Police Department said in a Facebook post. Officers found the man dead, with injuries consistent with being hit by a train.

The time of the collision has not been determined, a police sergeant at the scene said. A security guard with the center said he saw the man lingering near the tracks sometime between 3:30 and 4. He did not witness the collision because he had stepped away for a few minutes.

Just before 4, a Union Pacific train was traveling southbound along the tracks, police said in the Facebook post. “The male disappeared in the area, and was not seen again until the northbound train reported him being down along the tracks a short time later.”

The police sergeant said there are no known witnesses and that video surveillance footage will be pulled for review. UP Railroad police also were on the scene.

The man’s identity is being withheld pending family notification.

Anyone who witnessed the collision or has information regarding the investigation is asked to contact Stanislaus Area Crime Stoppers at 209-541-4636.
