A driver believed to have been in a hit-and-run collision Friday night in Modesto was killed within the next hour when he crashed into a fence, the California Highway Patrol reported.

About 10:53 p.m. Friday, the CHP was dispatched to a collision on Dakota Avenue south of Beckwith Road. The driver of a 1999 Lincoln Navigator struck another vehicle head-on, causing minor injuries to the other driver, the CHP said. The Lincoln driver, later identified as Miguel Luna, 46, of Modesto, reportedly left the scene and continued south on Dakota.

About 11:35, Luna was about three miles south on Dakota, at Maze Boulevard, driving at an undetermined speed. He made an unsafe turning movement and crashed into a wooden fence, the CHP reported.

The impact caused major front-end damage to the SUV, and Luna suffered blunt force trauma. Paramedics took lifesaving measures, but he was declared dead at the scene.

It is yet to be determined whether drugs or alcohol factored in the crash, the CHP reported.
