Driver killed when he rear-ends big rig on Interstate 5 at high speed
A resident of the Studio City neighborhood in Los Angeles was killed when he rear-ended a big rig at high speed on northbound Interstate 5 just south of the San Joaquin County line, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The crash occurred about 12:20 a.m. north of the Westley rest area, in an unincorporated area of Stanislaus County. Officers from the CHP Modesto office found 50-year-old Lance Ober still in his 2018 Nissan. Emergency medical personnel pronounced him dead at the scene at 12:58.
Two men in the 2018 Volvo tractor-trailer reported no injuries. The CHP identified the driver as Waheed Khan, 32, of Stockton and his passenger at Bradlee Gomes, 25, of Modesto.
The CHP report said it has not been determined whether drugs or alcohol factored in the crash. A CHP officer said that just prior to the crash, there was at least one report of a reckless driver on I-5, which appears to have been regarding Ober.
