Police investigating fatal shooting in northwest Modesto
Police said a man suffered fatal injuries Sunday in a shooting at a home in the 1300 block of Clevenger Drive in northwest Modesto.
The early-morning shooting sparked confusion around the home at Clevenger and Amigo Drive, one block west of Tully Road. Police blocked off the street and used a bullhorn to talk with people inside the home, witnesses said.
Modesto police Lt. Brandon Gillepsie said a man with a gunshot wound showed up at a local hospital about 12:30 a.m. Sunday. Authorities believe the man was wounded in the shooting on Clevenger. He died at the hospital. The man’s name has not been released.
J.R. Boyd, who lives next to the home, said he heard a lot of commotion at the home and then four or five shots. He said police responded with a SWAT team in military-style gear. Officers went into his backyard to take a position on the west side of the home, he said.
Some people inside the home were detained for questioning. “Our detectives are investigating. A bunch of people are being questioned,” Gillespie said.
Boyd referred to the dwelling as a drug house, and said police had responded to numerous calls to the home in the past year.
Two people, who said they witnessed the shooting, said the gunman was at the corner across the street from the house. He appeared to fire a semiautomatic weapon, they said. Police did not identify the type of weapon used in the shooting.
The witnesses said they saw four people in a white Jeep Cherokee arrive at the home and go inside to see the main tenant. The three men and a woman fled in the vehicle after the shots were fired, they said. The man who lives in the home was not the shooting victim, they said.
Detectives were at the scene Sunday trying to piece together what had happened and who was responsible.
Heather Graves, spokeswoman for Modesto police, said police had made no arrests.
