The driver of a Toyota Highlander was trapped inside the crumpled vehicle for about 20 minutes after he crashed into a tree on G Street on Wednesday evening.

The incident happened at about 5:30 p.m. Modesto Fire Department Battalion Chief Hugo Patino said it appears the Toyota was traveling at high speed when it turned onto G Street from First Street and lost control.

The driver was trapped inside the car and firefighters had to use tools to remove his door and peel back the Toyota’s roof.

He and a female passenger suffered moderate to major injuries and were taken by ambulance to Modesto hospitals.

Patino said two children in the back seat appeared to be uninjured but also were taken to the hospital for precautionary reasons.
