STATE STAFFS FOOTHILL FIRE STATIONS FOR SEASON

The rapid approach of wildfire season has prompted the opening this week of seasonal fire stations in Tuolumne, Calaveras and eastern Stanislaus and San Joaquin counties. The California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection has primary responsibility in the parts of this zone that are not covered by fire districts. Josh White, chief of the Tuolumne-Calaveras Unit at Cal Fire, reminds residents that they can help by reducing vegetation around their homes. Details are at www.ReadyForWildfire.org.

COLUMBIA TO LAUNCH CERTIFIED FARMERS MARKET

A new certified farmers market will launch May 7 on Main Street in Columbia State Historic Park. The outdoor market will run from 5 to 8 p.m. every Thursday through October, rain or shine, according to the Columbia Chamber of Commerce. There already is a year-round Mountain People Organics “Farmory” indoor market at the Columbia airport armory building every Wednesday and Saturday. “Some chamber members and residents have formed a small group to promote evening activity in Columbia. We call ourselves the Nights of Columbia and this is the first new event we have started to help achieve our goal of bringing some life back to Columbia after 5 p.m.,” said Angela Matulich, market manager, in a news release. “Not only will our local farmers have another outlet to provide their wonderful organic products,” said Heather Doyle, assistant market manager, “but we will have vendors with handcrafted items, unique foods and antiques. There will be activities for children, docents in costumes and plenty of music.” For more information, or to be a vendor, contact Matulich at (858) 220-9352 or Doyle at (209) 499-8273 or email columbiafarmersmarket@yahoo.com. A Facebook page – “Certified Farmers’ Market at Columbia State Historic Park” – has been established to post news and information about the market.
