Hike in Stanislaus County landfill fees could spur illegal tire dumping

The Stanislaus County Board of Supervisors approved higher fees Tuesday for worn tires taken to the Fink Road Landfill.

County officials said they expect the increased fees will result in more illegal dumping of tires on roadsides, which occurs now. But the county needs the revenue to pay a tire disposal contractor whose rates have increased 225 percent, staff members said.

Effective July 1, the fee charged at the gate for passenger car tires will be $2.50 apiece, up from $1. Fees for diesel truck tires will climb from $6.50 to $15 each, tractor tires from $10 to $25 each and earthmover tires from $100 to $225 each. The county has not raised the tire disposal fees since 2001.

Supervisors also took the following action Tuesday:

▪ Increased the landfill fee for dead horses and other large animals from $50 to $100 per animal.

▪ Changed the fee structure for inspection of underground fuel storage tanks. The county will charge a $522 flat fee, plus $100 for each tank.

▪ Revised the fees for everything from temporary food facilities to medical waste regulation and surface mine inspections. The county will charge $285 for pipeline maintenance agreements, which spell out that pipe owners are responsible for pipelines laid under county roads. The county entered about 30 pipeline agreements in 2013 and 2014 as farmers cut off from irrigation water tied in wells, staff members said.
