Burning vehicles and a garage displaced four residents Sunday afternoon, but firefighters stopped the flames from reaching their west Modesto home.

The fire was reported shortly after 1:30 p.m. Sunday at the house in the 2700 block of Chapparal Place, just south of Blue Gum Avenue and near Alberta Martone Elementary School.

The first firefighters who arrived found smoke and flames coming from the home's garage and two cars parked burning in the driveway, according to a news release from the Modesto Fire Department.

Fire officials said the residents' dogs alerted them to the fire, and the residents and their pets got out of the home on their own.

The firefighters launched an attack on the blaze. They found some structural modifications that made it difficult to reach the flames, so fire officials called for a second alarm to notify authorities that more firefighters were needed.

Firefighters from Modesto, Ceres and Stanislaus Consolidated Fire Protection District fire departments responded put out the house fire.

Crews contained the flames in the garage and the vehicles. Fire officials said the rest of the home did sustain smoke and water damage. No injuries were reported.

Red Cross officials were called to help the four displaced adults find a temporary place to stay. The fire caused an estimated $80,000 in damage. Investigators had not determined the cause or origin of the fire.
