Woman killed when hit by train near Escalon

A woman was killed Friday afternoon when she was hit by a train south of Escalon.

The incident occurred at about 2:30 p.m. at Santa Fe and East River roads, said Escalon Police Chief Mike Borges.

Escalon officers were the first on scene.

“The victim was found underneath (the train),” Borges said. “We started setting up perimeter to control the scene and wait for the SO’s arrival.”

The San Joaquin County Sheriff’s Office, which is investigating the incident, could not be reached for additional information.

The Burlington Northern Santa Fe train still was stopped at the scene at 6 p.m. Friday. About 300 passengers on two Amtrak trains were delayed by the incident.
