YESTERYEARS
40 YEARS AGO: The Modesto City Council approved a 6 percent motel tax increase, from 5 percent, in an effort to promote tourism. The increase was requested by the motel operators and the Greater Modesto Chamber of Commerce. The increase would benefit the chamber tourism committee, which needed $15,000, as stated by Shirely Elke, so that it could advertise and promote the city, in hopes to lure tourists and conventions.
