Train hits pedestrian in downtown Modesto

Police officers were investigating the death of a pedestrian who was struck by a train Sunday afternoon in downtown Modesto.

The fatality was reported about 4 p.m. Sunday near the Transit Center near Ninth Street, said Modesto police Sgt. Pat Kimes. Officers had closed streets surrounding the tracks throughout downtown Modesto.

Kimes said it's possible the investigation at the scene could take a while, and the streets could be closed for a few hours. Drivers are urged to take alternate routes and avoid the area.
