What: COMMUNITY HERO NOMINATIONS

When: Deadline April 24, 5 p.m.

Info: The American Red Cross Sierra-Delta Chapter is seeking nominations for individuals who have gone above and beyond to demonstrate a heroic act. Candidates can be anyone who lives or works in Stanislaus or Tuolumne counties. Twelve nomination categories are available. What: ORCHID SHOW

When: Saturday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Sunday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Where: Stanislaus Elementary School multipurpose room, 1931 Kiernan Ave.

Info: Orchid Magic is the 35th annual show and sale presented by Tropical Plant Society of Modesto. Orchid and tropical plants will be on exhibit, there will be potting demonstrations, and society members will be available to answer questions. Admission is free. What: HEALTH FAIR

When: Saturday, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Where: Hindu Temple of Modesto, 4801 Tully Road

Info: The second year of the temple’s health fair will include free screenings of blood pressure, blood sugar and body mass index. Free glucose meter strips and medical education handouts will be offered. There will be a free diabetic education class at 11:30 a.m. and a healthy recipe competition at noon. 40 YEARS AGO: For the fourth time in three years, the proposed rezoning of 9.4 acres at Briggsmore Avenue and Oakdale Road for commercial use was denied by the Modesto City Council. By a vote of 4-3, the council denied the request from Dr. Warren M. Soelling.
