GIRL SCOUTS HELP YOUNG FIRE VICTIMS

Troops in the Girl Scouts Heart of Central California Vintage Grove Service Unit in northwest Modesto continue to collect children’s hygiene kit items for families displaced by house fires. The donated items will be assembled into kits and given to the local American Red Cross. Items sought include kids’ toothbrushes and toothpaste, soap, shampoo, washcloths, towels and bandages. The Scouts also are seeking kids’ blankets, coloring books and crayons, reading books and puzzles. Troops are happy to pick up donated items; contact Jasmine Su at (209) 613-6122 or missjasminesu@gmail.com to make arrangements. Donations also may be dropped off at the Red Cross office at 1230 Sixth St. in downtown Modesto on April 18 from 9 a.m. to noon.

SYMPHONIC BAND WILL PERFORM AT MJC

The Symphonic Band at Modesto Junior College will perfrom a concert at 7:30 p.m. April 20 at in the Main Auditorium on East Campus, 435 College Ave. The band, conducted by Erik Maki, will play works by composers such as Jack Stamp, John Barnes Chance and Leonard Bernstein. Admission is free, but donations will be accepted. Parking in student lots is $2.

MARIPOSA HOSTS GEM AND MINERAL SHOW

The annual Mariposa Gem and Mineral Show will take place from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday at the California State Mining and Mineral Museum. The event will feature gemstones, jewelry, rock cutting, gold panning and other activities. Admission is $3 for adults, free for younger fans. The museum is at the Mariposa County Fairgrounds, on Highway 49 about two miles south of Mariposa.

FIRST WAVE OF RAIN PASSES MODESTO BY

Sunday’s overcast skies dropped zero measurable rain at the downtown office of the Modesto Irrigation District as of 8 p.m., but Manteca and Merced got a little. The National Weather Service forecast a better chance of rain today and Tuesday. The storm also could bring slight improvement to a Sierra Nevada snowpack that has been dismal. The central part of the range stood at 5 percent of average for April 1, according to the California Department of Water Resources. That is the main source for MID and several other water suppliers.
