Latino Roundtable to hear about dental surgery for children

Seeking follow-up on an issue covered by The Bee – area surgery centers’ use of general anesthesia for severely disabled adults and low-income children with extensive dental decay – the Latino Community Roundtable of Stanislaus County will hear Thursday from dentist Alan Vallarine of Turlock.

Vallarine will speak on “Children and Dental Surgical Treatment.”

“Many low-income families cannot afford to take their children for regular dental checkups,” according to a news release from LCR, “and by the time they do take them, it is no longer a routine checkup but the child is in need of major surgical treatment. Dr. Vallarine will share the hardship and situation that the denial of authorized treatment is causing the children and their families and how difficult it is for dental groups to receive the needed authorization for dental surgical treatment for children of low-income families.”

Vallarine is one of three speakers before the LCR at its noon meeting Thursday.

Also scheduled:

▪ “Take Me Out to the Ball Game” – Tyler Richardson was promoted in 2013 to general manager of the Modesto Nuts team, which is celebrating its 10th year under the Nuts name. “Tyler will share with us the opportunities available to nonprofit organizations to have fundraisers at the park,” the release says, “and provide a schedule of all the games and fun events at the park for 2015.”

▪ “Assembly Bill 86, Adult Education Programs” – Roberto Serrato, communications chairman for the AB 86 Stanislaus/Mother Lode Region Communication Committee, will give a presentation on AB 86 adult education. “In 2013,” says the LCR news release, “California passed AB 86, which set up a consortium planning grant where community colleges and K-12 school districts must collaborate and create a better system to support adult learners.”

Thursday’s LCR lunch meeting is at the Red Event Center, 921 Eighth St., Modesto. Lunch is free to the first 150 guests. To make a reservation, contact LCR President Maggie Mejia at maggiemejialcr@gmail.com or (209) 303-2664. To learn more, go to www.lcrstan.org.
