The Modesto Certified Farmers Market began its 37th season Thursday. It runs from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursdays and Saturdays on 16th Street between H and I streets.

Saturday will be the year’s grand opening. There will be Easter egg hunts for kids in three age divisions – 3 and under, 4 to 7 and 8 to 10 – with a gift basket awarded to the child in each group who finds the egg containing the message “You’re a winner!”

Registration begins at 9 a.m., with the hunts starting at 10. Easter crafts will follow until noon, and the Easter Bunny will visit and take photos with kids. Music will be provided by Fred McCarty.

“The Modesto Certified Farmers Market began in 1979 from humble beginnings,” according to its website, www.modestocfm.com. “A farmer, an MJC ag instructor and then-Mayor Peggy Mensinger brought fresh produce direct to the community long before ‘Buy Local, Buy Fresh’ became a catchphrase.”
