NOMINEES FOR RED CROSS HONORS SOUGHT

The American Red Cross Sierra-Delta Chapter is still accepting nominees for its ninth annual Heroes Breakfast, to be held June 3 at Modesto’s Doubletree by Hilton. Nominees can be anyone who lives or works in Stanislaus or Tuolumne counties and has exhibited a true act of selflessness during the past year. Nomination categories include active military, veterans, firefighters, law enforcement, medical, good Samaritan adult, good Samaritan youth, good Samaritan senior, workplace and animal rescue. “You are encouraged to consider the heroism surrounding us every day,” says a Red Cross news release. “The Heroes Breakfast is an opportunity to honor someone who isn’t ordinarily recognized for their courage or extraordinary compassion.” The deadline for nominations is 5 p.m. April 24. The nomination form is online at www.redcross.org/modestoheroes. For more information, to request a nomination form, submit a nomination, or inquire about event tickets and sponsorships, contact Liza Cruz at liza.cruz@redcross.org or (209) 986-0890.

LEARNING QUEST SEEKS LITERACY TUTORS

Learning Quest Stanislaus Literacy Centers strives to help students reach goals that often seem unattainable to the adult who first asks for help: learning to read and write, earning a GED, going to college and/or having a career. Learning Quest has a team of over 120 volunteers who spend hours each week helping their students. Anyone who is interested in volunteering with Learning Quest and can meet twice a week for at least 90 minutes is urged to attend the next new tutor orientation and training. The one-hour orientation is April 16 at 6:30 p.m., followed by a training April 18 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Both are offered at the Learning Quest building, 1032 11th St., Modesto. After being trained, each new tutor will be assigned a student based on the times and days that the tutor prefers and that coincide with when a student is also available. Tutors and students meet in a public place, such as one of the county libraries. These literacy services are provided free of charge through a partnership between Stanislaus County Library and Learning Quest. For more information on the training or to reserve a spot, call (209) 558-4505 or email nmelton@lqslc.com. More information is also available at www.lqslc.com/volunteer.
