Mariposa girl, 13, killed in Madera County crash
The 13-year-old Mariposa girl who died Saturday in a head-on crash on Highway 41 in Madera County was identified Monday as Kayla Choi, according to the Madera County Sheriff-Coroner's Office.
The California Highway Patrol said Antonio Lopez, 70, of Los Banos, was driving north on Highway 41 near Avenue 12 around noon when his Toyota Tundra crossed the double yellow lines, colliding head-on with a southbound Toyota Corolla.
The 46-year-old driver of the Corolla, Penelope Choi, and her 19-year-old passenger, Christina Jarrett, suffered major injuries, the CHP said. Kayla Choi was fatally injured. She apparently was not wearing a seat belt, the CHP said. All three were from Mariposa.
Lopez suffered minor injuries. His passenger, 65-year-old Isabel Ortiz, suffered moderate injuries.
The collision remains under investigation, but authorities do not think alcohol was a factor.
