Riverbank man suffers major injuries after walking into path of vehicle

A 61-year-old Riverbank man suffered major injuries when he stepped into the path of an oncoming vehicle and was hit on Sunday night in Riverbank, the California Highway Patrol said.

At about 8 p.m., the unidentified man walked onto Patterson Road near Howard Avenue directly into the path of a Subaru driven by Peter Colin Kanestrom, 26, of Riverbank. Kanestrom was unable to avoid the man, the CHP said, and the front of his vehicle struck the pedestrian.

Speed did not appear to be a factor in the collision, CHP said. Neither Kanestrom nor three passengers in the vehicle were injured. All were wearing their seat belts, CHP said.

The pedestrian sustained major injuries and was taken to Memorial Medical Center for treatment. No further information was available on his condition.

It is unknown if alcohol or drugs was involved, and an investigation into the incident is ongoing, CHP said.
