Modesto firefighters to climb 69 flights of stairs to raise money
Ten firefighters from Modesto will run up 69 flights of stairs – 788 feet of vertical elevation – in full gear Sunday in a Seattle fundraiser.
The Scott Firefighter Stairclimb raises money for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, which funds blood-cancer research and patient services.
Last year, 1,800 firefighters from more than 300 departments took part, bringing in a total of $1.97 million. They run up a total of 1,311 steps to reach the observation deck of the Columbia Center – the second-tallest building west of the Mississippi River, according to a news release.
The participating Modesto firefighters put in their own time to raise money and train for several months. They have collected 77 percent of their $15,000 fundraising goal.
The Modesto Fire Department team has a fundraising page through the Scott Firefighter Stairclimb website at: www.llswa.org/site/TR/Events/FirefighterStairclimb?team_id=58290&pg=team&fr_id=1453.
Anyone can donate through the link and can either sponsor a specific member of the team or the team in general.
