COVID-19 death toll jumps in Stanislaus County. What residents need to know
Stanislaus County public health over a two-day period reported 19 deaths caused by COVID-19 amid a continued decline in coronavirus transmission locally.
An update on the county online dashboard Friday recorded 138 new cases of infection and 10 deaths. It followed the nine deaths reported Thursday.
The county’s total death toll for the COVID pandemic rose to 1,646.
Kamlesh Kaur, a county health services spokeswoman, said there is a small backlog in reporting mortality numbers. The 19 deaths occurred between Jan. 7 and Jan. 19.
Deaths are not reported right away because the county makes an effort to verify COVID illness was the cause.
As of Friday, the coronavirus case rate has dropped to 24 per 100,000 population, down from a peak of 206 per 100,000 during the worst of the omicron variant surge in January.
COVID hospital admissions in the county declined to 91 in Friday’s update, with 19 patients infected with coronavirus in intensive care units.
Kaur said this week that coronavirus testing sites for the public have reduced their hours.
The Turlock and Ceres testing sites closed earlier, at 3 p.m. Thursday.
The county’s Turlock site will run from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday. The testing service in Ceres will operate from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday.
The test site at the Salida library parking lot remained open Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
