Coronavirus update, Dec. 9: Unvaccinated people dominate Stanislaus cases and deaths

Stanislaus County public health released data on COVID-19 cases among unvaccinated people and vaccinated residents in the second half of 2021. Health officials chose to pull data since July 1 to show a time period when a significant percentage of the county population was vaccinated.

The numbers show that 85.5% of positive COVID-19 cases since July 1 were unvaccinated people or those with partial vaccination. People who were not fully vaccinated accounted for 90.6% of deaths, or 310 of the 342 deaths, since July 1.

As of Tuesday, 54.2% of county residents age 5 and older were fully vaccinated against COVID-19. About 54% of adults age 18 to 49 were fully vaccinated. The rates were higher for older adults — 71.4% for those 50 to 64 and 76% for seniors 65 or older.

Slightly less than 3% of children ages 5 to 11 had received two shots of the Pfizer pediatric vaccine.

In Stanislaus County, older adults have been rolling up their sleeves for COVID booster shots, with 26.5% of residents 65 to 74 getting a booster and 29.5% in the 75 to 84 age group getting boosted.

The booster rate so far was 12.5% for people 55 to 64 years old, dropping to less than 10% in other adult age groups.

A total of 1,441 residents have died since the first was announced in April 2020, the Health Services Agency said. Stanislaus has 82,175 positive tests, 1,041,900 negative test results and 79,561 people who are presumed recovered.
