Stanislaus announces 7 more COVID-19 deaths. Total stands at 86, nearly half in July

Stanislaus County announced Friday that seven more residents have died from COVID-19, raising the total to 86.

Thirty-five of the deaths have been reported over the past 11 days by the county Health Services Agency.

Friday’s total was second only to the eight deaths reported July 20. The total for July so far is 42 people, almost equal to the total for the earlier months of the pandemic.

Details were not available on the seven people who died, nor the dates or locations of their deaths.

As of Friday, 7,603 county residents have tested positive for the virus. Another 47,171 tested negative, and 6,270 are presumed recovered.

The July surge in deaths comes amid concern about hospital capacity in the county, along with the need for more contact tracers for newly infected people.

The county reported its first death April 10, several weeks later than similar counties. May and June brought relatively moderate numbers.

Stanislaus had been among the counties starting to reopen certain sectors of the economy last month. The upsurge in cases and other indicators reversed some of that, including indoor dining.

Health officials remind residents that they must wear face coverings in public and stay at least 6 feet from non-household members.
