Stanislaus reports 8 more COVID-19 deaths. Total over past week reaches 20
Eight more Stanislaus County residents have died from COVID-19, bringing the total to 71, the county Health Services Agency said Monday.
Twenty of the deaths were reported over the past seven days, the county’s online update stated. No details were available on the eight people who died most recently.
Since July 5, 27 deaths in Stanislaus County have been reported. On Monday, San Joaquin County’s death toll rose to 94 and Merced County announced seven more deaths, bringing its total to 22.
Stanislaus also listed at zero percent the number of intensive care unit beds available for adults in its five hospitals.
Positive tests in Stanislaus County stood at 6,508 as of Monday, when 164 more were reported. Another 44,220 residents have tested negative, and 3,130 are presumed to have recovered.
Stanislaus had gone several weeks into the pandemic until its first death was announced April 10. May and June brought relatively moderate numbers, but July brought an upsurge.
The deaths happened amid concerns about hospital capacity and poor efforts by some residents to slow the virus with social distancing, face coverings and other measures.
The county, the 16th most populous in California, ranked 16th in the number of deaths before Monday night’s announcement.
The county’s struggles have prompted school officials to continue with distance learning and to close indoor dining, malls and a few other sectors that had briefly reopened.
COVID-19 deaths stood at 7,694 in California and 140,917 nationwide as of Monday evening, according to Johns Hopkins University.
