Six more added to the coronavirus death toll in Stanislaus County as cases increase

Stanislaus County’s coronavirus outbreak has added six more to the death toll.

The most recent update on the county’s data dashboard Tuesday said the total deaths from the COVID-19 respiratory illness rose to 57. No details were provided on the recent fatalities.

County Chief Executive Officer Jody Hayes said at the Board of Supervisors meeting Tuesday that the county was preparing to report less than 10 fatalities but the deaths did not occur on the same day. Hayes explained that it takes some time for public health officials to verify cause of death before the updated numbers are posted.

The county reported Tuesday that 178 additional county residents had tested positive for a four-day total of 723 new cases. The number of COVID patients hospitalized dropped from 188 to 182, with 41 in intensive care units.

An age breakdown shows that 88 percent of the 57 fatalities occurred in older people 65 or older. Adults age 50 to 64 represented 7 percent, and 5 percent (or 3 people) were 18 to 49.

Health agencies in California have confirmed 343,714 cases of coronavirus and more than 7,200 deaths, according to a Los Angeles Times tracking system.
