A Turlock nursing home, stricken by coronavirus infections among residents and staff, reported a ninth death on Tuesday.

State and county health officials have worked with Turlock Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in trying to contain an outbreak of COVID-19 illness. The nursing home reported the patient’s death in an update Tuesday but did not release additional information.

According to the notice, nine current and former residents have died and 73 residents and 36 staff members have tested positive for coronavirus.

Royjindar Singh, a spokesman for the Stanislaus County Office of Emergency Services, said the county had no record of a fatality Tuesday but was checking into the report.

The outbreak at the 144-bed center on East Tuolumne Road surfaced two weeks ago, when an employee tested positive. The cases are the main reason for a recent spike in the coronavirus caseload in Stanislaus County, health officials have said.

As of Tuesday evening, the county has recorded 433 confirmed cases of coronavirus infection. The latest count showed 45 people currently hospitalized, which is about 20 higher than a week ago. Five patients confirmed or suspected of COVID-19 illness are being treated in intensive care units.

According to a county Health Services Agency dashboard, the 126 cases in Turlock are more than any other city in the county. Modesto has 116 cases, Ceres has 45 and Patterson has 42.
