During the coronavirus pandemic and campus closure, Modesto Junior College is offering its Pirates Pantry food program as a walk-up or drive-through distribution of food boxes to students who sign up.

Dubbed Project Relief, the service had its first run Thursday, and cars were lined up more than a dozen deep within a few minutes of its 10 a.m. opening. Students filled out forms that were offered and taken back by staff using reacher-grabber tools. Then food recipients were directed to one of several stations, where boxes of supplemental food items were placed in their vehicle trunks.

Distributions are every other Thursday, with the next one set for May 7 on North Campus Way in front of the library on the east campus, 435 College Ave. Sign-ups begin Monday, April 27.

“We knew we needed to continue addressing food insecurities in our community,” MJC Vice President for Student Services Flerida Arias said in a news release about Pirates Pantry. “The COVID-19 crisis has increased this need even more for our students. The Pirates Pantry Relief Project allows us to address food insecurity needs, while also meeting public health safety standards during the pandemic.”
