Update: Wildfire near San Luis Reservoir up to 650 acres, now 50% contained

Cal Fire is trying to contain a wildfire that broke out near San Luis Reservoir on the border of Merced and Santa Clara counties on Wednesday morning.

The blaze, at Highway 152 and Dinosaur Point Road in Santa Nella, grew to about 650 acres at 1:12 p.m., according to the Cal Fire incident website. It is currently at 30% containment.

The Point Fire, as Cal Fire is calling it, was first reported as a 20-acre vegetation fire at 9:52 a.m. Cal Fire’s Madera-Mariposa-Merced unit is responding to the wildfire.

Cal Fire said 15 engines, two water tankers, three helicopters, two bulldozers and three hand crews are on scene of the blaze.

A total of 154 personnel are part of the response.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

California Highway Patrol in Los Banos said the No. 2 lane of eastbound Highway 152 is closed to allow for emergency vehicles. Traffic is moving, but is stop and go through the area, CHP Los Banos said in a Facebook post.
