A 42-year-old man was shot and killed by officers Friday after he was seen with a gun.
Fresno Police Chief Mindy Casto said officers arrived at about 11:30 a.m. to a home at 11th Street and Burns Avenue, near Cedar after receiving a call from a family member that their son had shown up at unwanted.
Officers were told the man had a gun in the backyard. They tried to speak to him, urging him to put the gun down for nearly 30 minutes before shots were fired, Casto said.
“Crisis negotiators were on the scene, attempting to negotiate with the individual,” Casto said. “The firearm was presented in a way as a threat to the officers, and shots were fired immediately thereafter.”
A drone was used, which located the man in the backyard with a gun next to him. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Casto said two officers fired their weapons.
It is unknown whether the suspect fired his weapon, Casto said.
“That’s a good possibility that he fired at the officers, but we’re not prepared to say that is 100% accurate at this time,” Casto said.
No other injuries were reported.
Casto said the man had caused previous disturbances with family members, and a restraining order was “possibly applied for.”
The roadway is expected to be closed for the next several hours.
Casto said it is the first officer-involved shooting in 2026.
