New Bee California Diversions Reporter has ‘no shortage’ of activities to cover

A Sacramento Bee journalist with a history of writing explainer pieces and other utility journalism stories is entering a new reporting space helping readers in Sacramento, other parts of the Central Valley and the rest of the state get the most out of living in California.

Camila Pedrosa started as the new California Diversions Reporter in May. Since beginning the new beat, she has been able to incorporate some of her own personal interests into the role. Here’s a closer look at her and her role:

Diversions Reporter sounds like a lot of fun, but what do you day-to-day covering this new beat?

So far, there has been no shortage of things to cover, Pedrosa said. With the World Cup , Pride Month , summer concerts and holidays, all these events are a testament for how much there is to do around town, she said.

Pedrosa has written a few features highlighting local organizations including a LGBTQ based run club, a bike organization and community space focused on providing widespread access to low-cost bicycles and California’s first women’s professional hockey team.

McClatchy Media’s other California markets, Modesto, Fresno, Merced and San Luis Obsipo, offer even more hidden gems. Pedrosa plans to explore those areas with support from the journalists who live and report there, she said.

What’s the most fun thing you’ve covered or are looking forward to covering soon?

Pedrosa recently got the chance to cover the Velocity Invitational at Sonoma Raceway, a three-day car meet. This year, a former Formula 1 driver, Yui Tsunoda, hosted a meet-and-greet and he also drove a Ford GT on the track, something Pedrosa said has been a dream of hers for years to see.

“I am so lucky to have the opportunity to lean into my own interests through this beat,” Pedrosa said.

Something else Pedrosa has covered is the Capital City Classic Tattoo Convention, where she — surprise — got a tattoo and took readers along with her.

What do you hope this beat is able to provide to readers?

Whether it’s going to one of the biggest music festivals in the world (think Coachella) or finding a quiet camping spot in the wilderness, Pedrosa says she wants readers to remember how much fun it is to live in California.

“My priority is to find the local adventures and events that are off the beaten path and hopefully introduce readers to something brand new,” Pedrosa said.

In your time here, as an intern, service reporter and now California Diversions Reporter, what do you like most about working at The Bee?

Pedrosa said the connections and friendships she has built while working at The Sacramento Bee have been special and meaningful, and that there’s a strong sense of camaraderie among the staff, especially from traveling far and working bizarre hours.

“I’ve learned so much from my talented colleagues, and they’ve definitely inspired me to be as best a reporter and writer as I can,” Pedrosa said.
