Leonardo DiCaprio film shot partly in Sacramento among top Oscars contenders

A Paul Thomas Anderson film starring Leonardo DiCaprio filmed partly in Sacramento ranked high in nominations for the 98th Academy Awards.

“One Battle After Another” had 13 nominations, placing second only to “Sinners,” which had a record 16 nominations. Director Ryan Coogler also has a Sacramento connection — he’s a Sacramento State alumnus. Coogler attended the university after earning a football scholarship.

“Marty Supreme,” which also has a Sacramento tie, had nine nominations.

Nominations were announced Thursday morning for the Oscars, which will be awarded March 15 at the Dolby Theater at Ovation Hollywood.

Nominations for “One Battle After Another” include DiCaprio for Best Actor, Benicio del Toro and Sean Penn for Best Supporting Actor, Teyana Taylor for Best Supporting Actress, Anderson for Best Director, and Best Picture.

The film also picked up nominations for casting, cinematography, film editing, music, production design, sound and adapted screenplay.

“One Battle After Another” led the Golden Globes with nine nominations and four wins, The Sacramento Bee previously reported.

“Marty Supreme” had nominations for Timothée Chalamet for Best Actor, Josh Safdie for Best Director and Best Picture.

It also had nominations for casting, cinematography, costume design, film editing, production design and screenplay.

Scott Gordon, a computer science professor at Sac State, did consulting work on “Marty Supreme,” which is inspired by the story of his late friend, a table tennis champion.

Other films topping the list of nominees include “Frankenstein” and “Sentimental Value.”

Based on the 1990 Thomas Pynchon novel “Vineland,” “One Battle After Another” stars DiCaprio as a washed-up former revolutionary who must rescue his daughter when she is kidnapped by his old nemesis, according to the official film synopsis.

The R-rated movie had an estimated budget of $175 million.

The R-rated film made $22 million on its opening weekend in September, according to The Numbers. It had a total worldwide gross of about $206 million.

“One Battle After Another” was partly filmed in Northern California and the Sacramento area in early 2024, The Sacramento Bee previously reported.

The production spent $5.3 million in Sacramento. It spent 16 shooting days within city limits and 172 local hires who worked on the film.

Recognizable Sacramento locations, such as the Tower Bridge, the Railyards and a county building downtown, were visible in trailers for the film.

However, the film itself isn’t set in Sacramento, but in a fictionalized location.
