Watch animals react to CA quake as elephants form ‘alert circle,’ cat confused
Videos have emerged showing curious animal reactions to a 5.2 magnitude earthquake striking the greater San Diego area on Monday.
The quake shook the area beginning at 10:13 a.m., according to the U.S. Geological Survey. The epicenter was near Julian, about 50 miles east of downtown San Diego, but could be felt as far away as the Los Angeles area.
Video from the San Diego Zoo Safari Park, shared via Aljazeera on VideoElephant, shows a herd of African elephants responding to earth moving. The animals come together to form a tight circle around a young elephant.
A zoo spokesperson told the San Diego Tribune that the behavior is called an “alert circle,” and is “intended to protect the young - and the entire herd - from threats.”
In another video shared by ViralPress via VideoElephant, a dramatic moment is captured as a pet cat appears confused in CCTV footage.
The startled feline checks its surroundings as the tremor shakes the house in San Diego County and wall decorations and a television set shake.
