These are California’s healthiest cities, new study says. Where did Sacramento land on list?
Sacramento is one of the top cities in the United States where people can live their best and healthiest lifestyle, according to a new study by Hers.
The health and wellness company ranked the Best and Worst Cities for Healthy Living in the United States based on nutrition, exercise and other factors.
“There are so many factors that can influence healthy living and weight loss,” Hers writer Lauren Ward wrote in June. “Genetics and psychology both play a major role, but so can a person’s environment.”
Here’s where Sacramento and other California cities ranked on Hers’ list.
Why is Sacramento a top city for healthy living?
Three California cities ranked among the top 10 healthiest cities in the nation, according to Hers.
Sacramento landed in the No. 7 spot, trailing behind Providence, Rhode Island.
That’s not the only time the capital city has earned attention for its focus on health.
Personal finance website WalletHub previously ranked Sacramento as the 35th healthiest city in America, and awarded the city 18th place on its list of the best cities for people seeking an active lifestyle in 2025.
Which other California cities made the list?
San Francisco was the highest ranking city in California — and the nation — in terms of the top spots for healthy living, Hers said.
The Bay Area city landed at No. 1. on the list.
San Diego took fourth place, Hers said, while San Jose was No. 14 and Los Angeles was No. 17.
On the other end of the spectrum, Riverside was one of the worst cities in the nation for healthy living, Hers said, ranking at No. 22.
Which U.S. cities are the healthiest?
According to Hers, these are the top 10 healthiest places to live in the United States:
San Francisco
Boston
New York
San Diego
Chicago
Providence, Rhode Island
Sacramento
Portland
Seattle
Raleigh, North Carolina
Which cities are the unhealthiest in America?
These are the 10 unhealthiest cities in the country, according to Hers:
Las Vegas
Birmingham, Alabama
Memphis
Columbus, Ohio
Phoenix
Kansas City
Oklahoma City
Orlando
Detroit
Charlotte, North Carolina
How did Hers come up with rankings?
Hers said it compared the 50 most populous metropolitan areas in the nation based on factors that contribute to overall health, including nutrition, behavior, movement and medical treatment.
The site used the following data points to determine the best U.S. cities for healthy living:
Number of grocery stores per 100,000 people
Percentage of adults sleeping less than 7 hours a night
Walkability
Access to psychologists and psychiatrists
Data came from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, Census Bureau, Environmental Protection Agency and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Hers said.
