Remote jobs remain popular a few years after the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, with 35% of employees working from home all of the time in 2023, according to a Pew Research Center survey.
The state is hiring for several positions with remote and hybrid work.
State jobs are known for offering competitive benefits and enrollment in the nation’s largest state public pension plan. Many of the following jobs have specific requirements, which are linked below.

Investment manager | Permanent, full time
- Department: Public Employees Retirement System
- Location: Sacramento County
- Salary: $15,250 to $25,416 per month
The investment manager is responsible for overseeing investment technology used by public equity, fixed income, total fund and affiliate investment program portfolio management teams.
The investment manager also oversees staff, contractors, budgets, consultants and managed services, and is responsible for supporting maintenance and technology operations.
This position is eligible for a hybrid work schedule, with up to two days of remote work and three days or more onsite per week.

Associate accounting analyst | Permanent, full time

The associate accounting analyst is responsible for the recording, maintenance, reconciliation and reporting of accounts receivable transactions within the state Department of Industrial Relations’ accounting systems and the Financial Information System for California.
This position is eligible for remote-centered hybrid telework up to three days per week
Applicants must work at least two days per week in the San Francisco office.
