San Francisco was the highest ranking California city on WalletHub’s list of the top 20 coffee cities in the United States.
According to the study, the Bay Area city’s “coffee-crazy households” spend more than $280 on coffee on average each year — the second-most of any U.S. city.
San Francisco also has the highest percentage of households with an espresso or cappuccino maker — more than 11% — and the second-highest percentage of folks with electric coffee grinders, with nearly 27%, WalletHub said.
Long Beach landed in seventh place, while Oakland was No. 11, Los Angeles was No. 12 and San Diego was No. 14.
Sacramento was ranked No. 18.
California fared well on the list despite it’s high cost coffee.
Santa Ana had the highest percentage of coffee drinkers in the nation, the WalletHub study found, followed by Anaheim in second place and Los Angeles in third. San Bernadino and Long Beach rounded out the top five.
Californians pay the most per pack of coffee, according to the study, and spend the most on coffee per household on average.
Oakland led the list of the most expensive places in the nation to buy grounds, followed by San Jose, Fremont and San Francisco. Three of those cities were also among the top five cites for household coffee spending.
Irving and San Francisco are among the U.S. cities with the highest percentage of people who own coffee makers, WalletHub said.
San Francisco had the second-highest number of affordable coffee shops, coffeehouses and cafés in the country, according to the study, as well as the most coffee and tea manufacturers per capita in California.

- Average spending on coffee per household
- Share of adult coffee drinkers
- Share of households that own coffee makers
- Number of affordable coffee shops per capita
Each metric was graded on a 100-point scale, with a score of 100 representing the “the most favorable conditions for coffee lovers. ” the site said.
