Heading out of town for Labor Day weekend? Don’t be surprised if you run into a crowd.
AAA recently released its travel trends and expectations for the holiday weekend, which marks the close of a “record-breaking, blockbuster summer travel season.”
“Americans see the extended Labor Day weekend as an opportunity to say farewell to summer with one final trip,” Debbie Haas, AAA vice president of travel, said in a news release. “Since many kids are already back in school, regional road trips tend to be the most popular option for families.”
According to the automobile association, domestic travel over Labor Day weekend is expected to be up 9% in 2024, compared to 2023.
A major California city is among the most popular destinations in the nation, AAA said.

AAA rounded up a list of the top 10 travel destinations in the United States for the 2024 holiday weekend.

AAA found the best and worst times to travel by car over the long weekend.
Here’s what to know if you plan to hit the road on these days:
Thursday
- Best times: Before 11 a.m.
Worst times: 1 to 7:30 p.m.
Friday
- Best times: Before noon or after 7 p.m.
- Worst times: 2 to 6 p.m.
Saturday
- Best times: After noon
- Worst times: 8 to 11 a.m.
Sunday
- Best times: Before noon
- Worst times: 2 to 8 p.m.
Monday
- Best times: Before 10 a.m.
- Worst times: 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.
Tuesday
- Best times: After 1 p.m.
- Worst times: 8 a.m. to noon
