These California restaurants are among top 10 sushi spots in US, Yelp says. See the list
California has some of the best sushi restaurants in the country, according to Yelp’s latest round up.
The popular review website recently released its 2024 Top 100 Sushi Spots, ranking the best places for nigiri, sashimi and hand rolls in the United States.
A total of 10 California restaurants landed on the list, with four landing in the top 10.
However, Yelp reviewers snubbed Kru Contemporary Japanese Cuisine in Sacramento. Restaurant owner Billy Ngo was among five finalists for the James Beard Awards’ Best Chef: California honor.
What’s the best sushi restaurant in the country?
Kauai Sushi Station in Lihue on the island of Kauai in Hawaii was named the best sushi restaurant in the United States for the second year in a row.
“If there’s such a thing as a fine-dining food truck, Kauai Sushi Station is it,” Yelp said. “Customers get their food served on actual plates, decorated with organic edible flowers, under a ‘beautiful’ canopy that protects them from Kauai’s on-again, off-again tropical rain.”
The restaurant has a 4.8-star rating on Yelp.
Yelp reviewer Arlene P. said the spot serves up the “best sushi I’ve had in a long time.”
Imari Sashimi and Sushi in Updland was No. 2 on Yelp’s list, while Hamachi Sushi Express in La Habra took third place.
Where are best sushi spots in California?
Imari Sashimi and Sushi was the highest ranking California restaurant on Yelp’s list of the 100 best sushi spots in the nation.
“Imari Sushi is like a culinary miracle,” Yelp user Justin H. wrote about the takeout-only restaurant. “The sushi is so good; it’s like each roll was personally approved by the food gods.”
Yelp reviewers also raved about the offerings at Hamachi Sushi Express.
“The best quality sushi is found here. Hands down,” Yelp reviewer Jenny W. wrote. “Fish is always fresh. Flavors are always on point, too.”
Makai Sushi in San Diego was No. 8 on Yelp’s list, while Ahi Sushi Japanese Restaurant in Bakersfield was No. 10.

How did Yelp come up with rankings?
Yelp said it looked at restaurants in the sushi category and ranked them based on total volume and review ratings.
“All businesses were marked open on Yelp as of April 4, 2024,” it said. “When available, all businesses on this list have a passing health score as of April 4, 2024.”
