While women have always been a part of military operations, the military has not always allowed them to serve in all positions and they haven’t always gotten recognition for their service.
As opportunities for women in the U.S. military have increased, the population of female veterans in the United States has also grown.
Since 2010, the population of female veterans in the nation has increased by 81,000.
With the total number of veterans and the number of male veterans decreasing every year, women are making up a larger proportion of the veteran population.
How many female veterans live in California?
Alaska and and Virginia boasted the highest proportion of female veterans in the nation in 2022, according to data from the National Center of Veterans Analysis and Statistics.
Alaska had nearly 29 female veterans per 1,000 women in the state, while Virginia had more than 24 female veterans per 1,000 women.
In comparison, California had nearly eight female veterans per 1,000 women.

Which California counties have the most veterans?
Yuba County had the highest proportion of female veterans of any California county in 2022, with about 22 female veterans per 1,000 women.
Solano County came in second place with about 21 female veterans per 1,000 women, while Kings County was third with 20 female veterans per 1,000 women.
Elsewhere in Northern California, Sacramento County had nearly nearly 12 female veterans per 1,000 women, while Stanislaus County had approximately six female veterans per 1,000 women and Merced County had about eight.
Fresno County in the Central Valley had more than seven female veterans per 1,000 women.
On the Central Coast, San Luis Obispo County had approximately 11 female veterans per 1,000 women.
