A Fresno police officer lost consciousness for a moment and ended up in the hospital after trying to transport a suspect to jail.

It happened some time after 1 p.m. Thursday.

Police were in the process of leaving the area of Peach and Kings Canyon after detaining without incident a man who had outstanding warrants.

Moments later, one of the officers suddenly became ill.

Fresno police believe the ill officer might’ve been exposed to an unknown substance found in bags, officer Christopher Clark said.

At one point, the ill officer lost consciousness

Clark said the other officer at the scene helped his/her partner regain consciousness by giving Naloxone, also known as Narcan, which is an opioid antagonist medication that is used to reverse an opioid overdose.

Clark added that by the time EMS arrived, the ill officer was stable and talking.

He was transported to Fresno Community Regional Medical Center and was expected to make a full recovery, Clark said.

The suspect who was in the police vehicle with the ill officer also was taken CRMC out of precaution and was said to be OK.

The substance found in the bags still was being investigated.
