Mom killed in 6-story stadium plunge with child died by suicide, California police say

A mother who fell with her 2-year-old son from a San Diego stadium before a baseball game in September died by suicide, police have ruled.

The 40-year-old woman and her child died after plunging the equivalent of six stories from an upper concourse at Petco Park on Sept. 25, McClatchy News reported. They were attending a San Diego Padres game.

After “a thorough and comprehensive investigation that included dozens of interviews, reviewing of available video footage, and collecting background information,” authorities determined the woman died by suicide, a police news release said.

Her 2-year-old son’s death has been ruled a homicide, police said.

Police said they understood the “public’s concern and interest in this tragedy that happened publicly in a venue where the community gathers” but will make no further statements.

“In light of today’s statement from the San Diego Police Department we want to reiterate our deepest sympathy and condolences to the family of those involved in this tragedy,” the San Diego Padres said in a statement, KSWB reported.

The mother and child fell from an upper dining concourse just before 4 p.m., McClatchy News reported. People on a nearby pedestrian bridge crossing Tony Gwynn Drive called 911. The woman and child were pronounced dead at the scene.
