These interactive maps show how full California hospitals are as COVID surge intensifies
Some hospitals in California are nearing 100% occupancy, while others hover in the 90% range and below, according to data from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
Only 19% of California’s staffed adult intensive care unit beds are available, with 32.2% of them taken by COVID-19 patients as of Monday, state data show.
Last week, 22% of ICU beds were available in the state and 23.7% of them were taken by COVID patients.
The state is facing a surge in cases amid the spread of the dominant omicron variant, which experts say is often more mild than delta but highly contagious.
The following maps were compiled by Data Herald, a data visualization company, using information from HHS. Here are the hospital bed occupancy percentages at California hospitals, last updated on Jan. 11:
Hospitalization data
California reached a total of 11,815 COVID-19 hospitalizations as of Tuesday, an increase of 767 in one day, according to the state’s COVID-19 data.
California has a total of 1,813 ICU patients with confirmed and suspected COVID-19 cases — an increase of 103 from Monday’s total.
There are 1,601 ICU beds currently available — three fewer than the day before.
Unvaccinated people are more likely to be hospitalized from COVID-19.
Between Dec. 20 and Dec. 26, unvaccinated people were more than 10 times more likely to be hospitalized with COVID-19 than fully vaccinated people, according to the state.

COVID-19 cases and deaths
California’s positivity rate is currently 22.4%, according to the state’s COVID-19 data.
As of Tuesday, California confirmed a total of more than 6 million COVID-19 cases and roughly 76,500 deaths since the pandemic began.
The state currently has a daily average of more than 15,000 cases and 45 deaths.
