Drowning teens rescued from riptide off Northern California beach, officials say

Rescuers pulled three teenagers swept away by a riptide Saturday evening from the surf near Sutro Baths in San Francisco, firefighters say.

In a series of Twitter posts, the San Francisco Fire Department said firefighters were called at 5:10 p.m. to a report of swimmers in distress near the ruined saltwater baths in the Lands End area of the city.

Seven rescue swimmers, a boat and a helicopter took part in the rescue, the agency says. One of the teens required CPR while still in the surf.

The three 17-year-olds had become stuck in a riptide and were drowning, said Lt. Jonathan Baxter, KGO reported. All are expected to survive.

The San Francisco Fire Department conducted eight surf rescues and one cliff rescue Saturday as people flocked to the coast to escape a heat wave gripping California, a later Twitter post says.
