I nearly fell asleep on the job last week.
Not from boredom, but because I experienced something so relaxing, it was difficult to finish the workday.
If you’re on TikTok or YouTube, you may know that ASMR (autonomous sensory meridian response) is a growing trend. A new studio in Modesto specializes in this sensory experience by offering light touch body and scalp scratching.
“Some may be familiar with ASMR as whispers and talking or eating,” said Sarah Kalinoff, owner of Scratched. “I use more tactile ASMR, which is the use of sound, soft touch and music ambiance.”
Kalinoff is a Modesto native with a background in medical coding and billing. She created Scratched as an alternative wellness and self-care space, set apart from traditional spas.
Sessions include light touching such as scalp and body scratching, hair play, hair brushing, and ASMR sensory focused sessions. Kalinoff uses her nails, fingertips, feathers, chopsticks, jade combs and other sensory tools during the sessions.
“I’ve been a fan of ASMR for quite a few years and I noticed that it was moving more from online to physical spaces,” she said. “I feel that with the consistent use and continuing growth of technology, we’ve lost the connection of human touch that I think a lot of people actually miss.”
There are five options to choose from when booking a session: a trial service is $20 for 15 minutes, a scalp and crown session is $65 for 30 minutes, an upper-body session is $65 for 30 minutes and a full-body session is $105 for one hour or $130 for 90 minutes.
Scratched is licensed through the city of Modesto and Kalinoff is Barbicide certified, which means she has been trained in safety and hygiene practices. The studio is inside Clara’s Body Bar at 1031 McHenry Ave., Suite 20.
Business hours are 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays, and 4 to 8 p.m. Mondays and Tuesdays. Sessions are by appointment only.
Kalinoff said that eventually, she’d like to attend events, have her own storefront and expand into mobile services working with hospitals, first responders and retirement homes.
