I took my nieces and nephew to Play Turlock. See what they did

Inside Look is a Modesto Bee series where we take readers behind the scenes at restaurants, new businesses, local landmarks and news stories.

When I learned a new indoor playground offering memberships was opening in Turlock, I knew exactly what I was getting my nieces and nephew for Christmas. But first, we had to try it out.

Play Turlock opened Oct. 10 at 749 N. Golden State Blvd. as an extension to Play Modesto, on Sisk Road near Vintage Faire Mall.

Miguel and Natalie Topete, who own both locations, opened the Modesto spot around seven years ago when their daughters were younger and Natalie had to drive out of the area for play dates.

“There wasn’t much out here for this age group,” Miguel Topete said. “An opportunity came up and it felt like the stars aligned. It was right next to (the now-closed) Babies ‘R’ Us. There’s a 4D baby viewing place in that same plaza. It was like the perfect baby block.”

Around a year ago, the couple decided they wanted to open a second location, but it took them a while to find an ideal spot. Play Turlock took over a Goodwill store in a shopping center with Smart & Final and DD’s Discounts.

How much does it cost to play?

For $20, kids up to 10 years old can play all day at the indoor playground. The cost for crawlers is $10. Two adults can accompany each child for free.

Prices are lower at the Modesto location because Play Turlock is a much bigger facility, Topete said.

Reusable grip socks are required for all kids and cost $3. Accompanying adults can wear regular socks, but Play Turlock is a shoeless facility.

A waiver must be signed for each child, acknowledging risk factors, policies and procedures. It can be signed online ahead of time and is valid for a year.

Unlimited play memberships are available and can be used at the Modesto location as well. For one child, a Play Turlock membership costs $78 per month — equivalent to fewer than four visits.

“Anything beyond that is kind of like icing on the cake,” Topete said. “There are some families that come twice a week to make it worthwhile.”

The price is $108 per month for two children (equivalent to fewer than three visits for two children) and $138 for three children (equivalent to just over two visits for three children).

What does Play Turlock offer?

One of my nieces, Reagan, is rarely seen not dressed as a princess. Play Turlock has a little room with a dress-up rack stocked with princess dresses and other costumes.

While Reagan and her friend Noelle dressed as a rainbow princess and Elsa, my other niece, Josie, was the Hulk.

Much to parents’ relief, I’m sure, the makeup station next to the rack is stocked with play lipstick, eyeshadow, blush and brushes. Though the fact that the makeup wasn’t real is the first thing Reagan noted, she continued to “apply it” to her face.

The kids’ other favorite amenities were the “grocery store,” the pretend ice cream truck, the Plinko-style wall, the air hockey table, the carousel and the ninja warrior-style course.

My 7-month-old niece, Sawyer, and her 1-year-old friend, Danielle, mostly played in the area designated for crawlers.

Tuckered out after playing for a couple of hours, the kids gathered at the little café area for ice cream.

Other things sold are Lunchables, chips, candy and juice. When it’s in full operation, the café will offer espresso drinks, slushies and snacks like nachos, Topete said.

As we were putting our shoes back on, the kids told me they had the “best day ever.”

Play Turlock is open Monday from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m., Tuesday through Friday from 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday through Sunday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
