Children’s secondhand store moving next to Trader Joe’s in Modesto
Modesto’s Once Upon A Child is moving after 14 years at Plaza Parkway, next to Walmart.
The secondhand retail store will open at 3250 Dale Road, Suite A, by mid-September — in the Trader Joe’s shopping center. Plato’s Closet, Once Upon A Child’s sister store, is in the same center.
“Our store is expanding,” owners Tyler and Shelby Hageman told The Modesto Bee on Tuesday. “Meaning more great deals and tons more product hitting the floor.”
Franchisee Marilyn Corona — a board member of Foster Children Care of Stanislaus County — opened Once Upon a Child in Modesto in 1996, according to Bee archives. Then, it was at 3440 McHenry Ave. near Sylvan Avenue.
The store expanded and moved from the 2,200-square-foot unit to a 3,900-square-foot space on Plaza Parkway in 2011.
The Hagemans took ownership of the store in 2023 and are now moving it into the even bigger space on Dale Road, though they are “not sure the exact square footage.”
Once Upon A Child has more than 400 individually owned and operated locations and buy and resells gently used clothing, shoes, toys and baby gear.
For now, it’s still open at 2225 Plaza Parkway Mondays through Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Sundays from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.
