Sam’s Club will open its first-ever warehouse within the 209 area code.

The company’s newest location will open in Lathrop, a city around 30 minutes from Modesto, Lathrop’s Economic Development Department announced Thursday.

The warehouse will move into Stanford Crossing, a new shopping center along Interstate 5. Sam’s Club is expected to “significantly enhance” local shopping options, provide employment opportunities and boost economic activity within Lathrop, according to a news release.

“Lathrop’s position as California’s fastest-growing city makes it an ideal location for retailers,” Lathrop Mayor Paul Akinj said in a statement. “This is a major win for the community, and we are excited to welcome Sam’s Club with open arms.”

Additional details regarding construction timelines and the Lathrop location’s specific amenities will be announced in the coming months as development progresses, according to the release.

As of now, the closest Sam’s Club warehouse to Modesto is at 8250 Power Inn Road in Sacramento.

The company plans to open around 15 new clubs each year while remodeling its existing 600 locations, Sam’s Club President and CEO Chris Nicholas said during Walmart Inc.’s 2025 Investment Community Meeting.

Sam’s Club is a membership warehouse club owned by Walmart. It has a limited-item business model that “offers members quality products at an exceptional value unmatched by traditional retail.”

Club member benefits include free health screenings, daily sampling demonstrations and savings on fuel. Plus member benefits include free shipping on most items along with Sam’s Cash, early shopping and savings on medications.
